I’m throwing a dinner party.
The vibe is warm and expansive; there are splashes of gold, backgrounds of white, pops of green, and an occasional drop of soft, rosy pink because these are colors that make me feel alive and at home right now. There is a table–dark, golden, heavy, and round. It’s a big table, and it is abundant.
I’ve invited the whole crew, and they’ll all be here because they don’t miss an invitation. Joy will be seated next to sorrow, pain will accompany goodness, and fear will walk in with wonder. You see, all of my experiences, all the things I feel in a moment, a day, a lifetime–they’re all here at the Table of Life.
This isn’t a perfect dinner party and I don’t think Emily Post will be making an appearance. It’s messy over here in these seats, and crowded because everyone is always here. Everyone’s elbows are touching and sometimes someone gets bumped when someone else moves too quickly. It can be loud and uncomfortable, because, well, discomfort is one of the guests here. Don’t worry, though, we’re all getting comfortable with him because Discomfort is an important part of life.
You know who else is here? Joy, wonder, and delight–a much-loved trio who are in high demand. They can be easy to miss when they arrive because sometimes I am looking for something else and miss what’s right here in front of me. When I find them, I like to take a few moments with Gratitude and sink into feeling the presence of wonder and the others. Gratitude doesn’t miss much, really.
It’s all welcome at this table.
